Statistical Training Course on ‘SDG 5 Indicators’

Date: 23-24 June 2026
Venue: Virtual-SESRIC, Ankara - Türkiye

Within the framework of its Statistical Capacity Building (StatCaB) Programme, SESRIC organised a Statistical Training Course on “SDG 5 Indicators” on 23–24 June 2026 through an online video conferencing platform, in collaboration with the Department of Statistics of Malaysia (DOSM).

The course brought together 62 participants from National Statistical Offices (NSOs) and other relevant institutions of 28 OIC Member Countries.

The training course was delivered by Mr. Wan Mohd Shahrulnizam Wan Mohd Najuri, Senior Director; Ms. Suraya Hani Mohamad Ashiat, Principal Assistant Director; Ms. Norfariza Hanim Kasim, Senior Deputy Director; Mr. Muhammad Hazim Mohd Abd Rahim, Assistant Director; and Ms. Salwana Mahmood, Deputy Secretary, all from DOSM.

The main objective of the course was to enhance the practical understanding of SDG 5 indicators, including their concepts, internationally agreed definitions, data sources, compilation methodologies, and reporting considerations, while facilitating the sharing of Malaysia’s relevant country experience with the participating OIC Member Countries.

SDG 5 emphasises equality between women and men and the empowerment of women as essential elements of a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. Achieving this goal requires action on multiple fronts: eliminating violence and discrimination against women, ending child marriage, ensuring reproductive and sexual health, strengthening women’s participation in the workplace and in political and public life, and securing equal ownership rights over land and property.

The training covered the following topics:

  • Overview of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework, with particular focus on SDG 5
  • Concepts, definitions, and methodological foundations related to SDG 5 indicators
  • Data sources for SDG 5 indicators, including censuses, surveys, administrative records, and other relevant sources
  • Practical approaches to compiling, analysing, and interpreting selected SDG 5 indicators
  • Malaysia’s experience and good practices in the production, reporting, and dissemination of SDG 5 indicators

The training course provided a platform for participants to exchange views on conceptual, methodological and operational challenges in producing and using official statistics on SDG 5 indicators. It also contributed to strengthening peer learning and statistical cooperation among OIC Member Countries in support of more inclusive, evidence-based and data-driven policymaking.

The StatCaB Programme was initiated in early 2007. Since its initiation, SESRIC has completed more than 590 capacity-building activities on various statistical domains and themes through different modalities.
